Vintage Italian Bike Race

Dad emailed me about this last night. This is a race/ride in Tuscany called L'eroica (The Heroic). The best part about the race is that it is designed for vintage bicycles racing on the old dirt roads that still wind through the Tuscan countryside.

Sorry there is no commentary, but this is the best video on Youtube that I could find.

Awesome!

Did I ever tell write about Fujishita-san's hand-built wooden rims? They come from a guy in Italy who's been doing that sort of thing for decades and they're superlight and have a very comfortable road feel (and they look great--especially, I should add, on a steel steed like mine) but boy do they cost a ton. They're a few hundred bucks per rim, but the special spokes the guy recommends to match them are ten bucks a piece. I might get new wheels someday, but I think I need a new job before I can think about getting those!

Suddenly, my old bikes (really our old bikes) look rather new. I think the wooden rims would look great on an old beige Trek. I would need a different career to get those at this point. I'll be looking for racing goggles during the winter in case I can make this race next year.

Hey, Dan,

Here are some wood rims on sale from ebay.

Only $200.00. Then get some nice wide 24cm Challenge Paris-Roubiax tubies and you would be rocking a really classic ride.
